Keeping the Main Thing… the Main Thing!

If you are like most of the people you know and work with these days, you probably got up this  morning and were already behind for the day regarding all the things you need to get done. Yes, it seems like no matter how hard or fast we work, we always seem to be rushing, running and wrestling with getting things done in a quick and orderly fashion….and that’s not good for our blood pressure…or our walk with Christ.

In fact, that story line dates all the way back to the time of Jesus when he stopped for a short visit with some friends of his….Mary, Martha and their brother, Lazarus.

Luke 10:38-42 from The Message reads, “As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. ‘Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.” The Master said, ‘Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main thing and won’t be taken from her.”

Martha was upset and displeased that she had been left to do it all, while her sister, Mary, had found her place at the Savior’s feet and was taking in His every word. Martha was anxious that all would not be prepared in time, while Mary was astounded by the words of the Savior that melted her heart and captivated her soul.

Martha demanded help ….Mary sought love and acceptance….Martha was concerned for the temporal things of this life ...Mary's heart was set on things eternal...and in the kind words of Jesus’ reproof, Mary found that she had indeed chosen wisely! Mary had chosen the one essential thing…The Main Thing…Time with Jesus.

Have you made the choice today to make the Main Thing, the main thing in your life? To forsake schedules, time constraints, excuses and even service for the sake of doing in pursuit of the main thing…Time with Jesus. The time you spend in reading and studying the Word of God will instill in you one thing that is inescapable....Your  need for a Savior. Your alone time with Him will give you instruction in how you can make Jesus the Lord of your life and how you can effectively have a closer walk with him. …it will convince you time and time again of your need to keep the Main Thing…the Main Thing.

There is no substitute for getting to know Jesus better than by spending time with Him by reading, ingesting and meditating on His Holy Word. Martha thought it was service to Him…Mary showed her it was in spending time with Him…......

That was, and still is.....THE MAIN THING!

Keeping my seat at His feet...hanging on every word,

Trusting Your Headlights

I have a cousin who always had a rather odd quirk….to start reading any book, she always turned to the last couple of pages and read those first.

It seems that she had one of those personalities that needed to know the outcome of any and all situations. Maybe you can identify with that mentality.

In fact, when I think about it, I know a lot of Christians that operate their lives and the basis of their walk with Jesus in much the same manner. They are firm believers in Romans 8:28 that tells us that everything works out for good for those that love the Lord and are called according to His purpose….they are willing to follow Jesus; they just want to know what the final destination will look like before they get there.

In their head, they understand the scripture in Psalms that tells us that God’s word is a lamp unto our feet….it is a light for our way; however, their heart has a hard time letting them put into practice the trust that is involved in starting out on a journey with a limited light source.

But think for a moment about the headlights on your car. On a dark moonless night, most anyone with common sense would not start out on a journey (even on a familiar street) without turning on the car’s headlights…even if we knew exactly where we were going and how to get there. We would flick the switch and illuminate our path. An although our path might shine brightly, we would not be able to see all the way to our final destination…so we would have to trust the 150 feet or so of light that our headlights illuminate. In other words, we would trust that as far as the lights shine, we can travel unafraid and ready to deal with whatever might appear before us….we would trust our headlights and proceed to our final destination assured that if we follow the light, we will arrive safe and secure.

The same is true for us in our Christian journey of life. We know our final destination is home…our heavenly home; but unless we trust the headlights on our vehicle, we may never leave the comforts of the driveway. Maybe God is calling you to trust Him and move out in faith to lead a Bible study, to go on a summer mission trip, to comfort a co-worker and speak of your faith in Christ….you don’t have to know the outcome; you just have to trust the “lights” that God is using to illuminate your path.

My favorite Old Testament scripture in Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord; plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

God knows our future is forever with Him and our hope is our eternal home in Heaven that He has prepared….nothing else really matters….but if your are like my cousin and need to know the end of the story first, then turn to Revelation 22:20 and read,

“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come Lord Jesus!”

Trusting His Word to Light My Path,

WPQ

Thought for the Day:

The Bible is God’s headlights
To light the unseen way;
We need not know the destination
But just trust Him for today.

For when we put our faith in Him
His plans for us are sure;
To live a life in Him complete….
Righteous …Holy….Pure.

R U Making a Difference?

Today’s thought is a true story that was sent to me by a friend in an email under the heading, “everyone is special.” Please read on and see if you don’t agree….

At the prodding of my friends I am writing this story. My name is Mildred Honor and I am a former elementary school music teacher from Des Moines, Iowa. I have always supplemented my income by teaching piano lessons - something I have done for over 30 years. During those years I found that children have many levels of musical ability, and even though I have never had the pleasure of having a prodigy, I have taught some very talented students. However, I have also had my share of what I call 'musically challenged' pupils - one such pupil being Robby…..

Now, Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer that students (especially boys) begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby. But Robby said that it had always been his mother's dream to hear him play the piano, so I took him as a student.

Well, Robby began his piano lessons and from the beginning I thought it was a hopeless endeavor. As much as Robby tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel. But he dutifully reviewed his scales and some elementary piano pieces that I require all my students to learn. Over the months he tried and tried while I listened, cringed and tried to encourage him. At the end of each weekly lesson he would always say 'My mom's going to hear me play someday'. But to me, it seemed hopeless; he just did not have any inborn ability.

As it was, I only knew his mother from a distance as she dropped Robby off or waited in her aged car to pick him up. She always waved and smiled, but never dropped in. Then one day Robby stopped coming for his lessons. I thought about calling him, but assumed that because of his lack of ability he had decided to pursue something else. I was also glad that he had stopped coming - he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!

Several weeks later I mailed a flyer recital to the students' homes. To my surprise, Robby (who had received a flyer) asked me if he could be in the recital. I told him that the recital was for current pupils and that because he had dropped out, he really did not qualify. He told me that his mother had been sick and unable to take him to his piano lessons, but that he had been practicing. 'Please Miss Honor, I've just got to play' he insisted. I don't know what led me to allow him to play in the recital - perhaps it was his insistence or maybe something inside of me saying that it would be all right.

The night of the recital came and the high school gymnasium was packed with parents, relatives and friends. I put Robby last in the program, just before I was to come up, thank all the students and play a finishing piece. I thought that any damage he might do would come at the end of the program and I could always salvage his poor performance through my 'curtain closer'.

Well, the recital went off without a hitch; the students had been practicing and it showed. Then Robby came up on the stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked as though he had run an egg beater through it. 'Why wasn't he dressed up like the other students?' I thought. 'Why didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?'

Robby pulled out the piano bench, and I was surprised when he announced that he had chosen to play Mozart's Concerto No. 21 in C Major. I was not prepared for what I heard next. His fingers were light on the keys; they even danced nimbly on the ivories. He went from pianissimo to fortissimo, from allegro to virtuoso; his suspended chords that Mozart demands were
magnificent!

Never had I heard Mozart played so well by anyone his age.

After six and a half minutes he ended in a grand crescendo, and everyone was on their feet in wild applause! Overcome and in tears, I ran up on stage and put my arms around Robby in joy. 'I have never heard you play like that Robby! How did you do it?

Through the microphone Robby explained: 'Well, Miss Honor, remember I told you that my mom was sick? Well, she actually had cancer and passed away this morning. And well ...... she was born deaf, so tonight was the first time she had ever heard me play, and I wanted to make it special.'

There wasn't a dry eye in the house that evening. As the people from Social Services led Robby from the stage to be placed into foster care, I noticed that even their eyes were red and puffy. I thought to myself then how much richer my life had been for taking Robby as my pupil.

No, I have never had a prodigy, but that night I became a prodigy ....... of Robby. He was the teacher and I was the pupil; for he had taught me the meaning of perseverance…of love… and of believing in yourself when all others might have their doubts. He taught me that everyone is special….all they need is a chance and a little encouragement to become the person God wants them to be.

So the question becomes by friend, are you making a difference as an encourager in the life of someone you know? It only takes a moment or a quick smile sometimes to provide the emotional lift that someone needs to keep going when all the odds seemed stacked against them…are you reaching out with an open hand and saying, “Let me help…let me encourage you to never give up; to believe in your dream and in yourself.”

God has done that for you through His Son and the gift of His Holy Spirit indwelling in you….go and do likewise!!

Longing to be called Barnabas….”Son of Encouragement”,

Who’s Driving the Boat?

When I began my active duty in the Navy, I reported to my duty station, the USS Strong, without a billet classification; so, I was immediately assigned to the Deck Force. Now besides being in charge of the overall upkeep the ship, it was our job to steer the ship…to man the helm while underway.

I’ll never forget my trepidation when I took hold of the helm for the very first time. I was in the middle of the Atlantic, water surrounding me on all sides, no lines or boundaries or demarcations of any type to give me a point of reference ….absolutely nothing to help aim the ship and steer toward a destination. I only had the big wheel and a heading marker that gave our course direction in degrees.

I truly wanted to panic…but then the Officer of the Deck, the one who was in charge of directing our course, shouted out a command, “Come to a heading of 175 degrees north, speed 15 knots.” I immediately shouted back his command and began to spin the wheel and watched as the heading began to change…..155 …160….165…170…and then, I reversed the wheel several turns until the heading was exactly 175. We were on course and heading toward the direction that the OOD had called out. Now, I’m not sure how he knew exactly where we were heading or the calculations that were required to make sure that we stayed on course to our final destination….but day or night, whenever I was at the helm, I knew I could trust the Officer of the Deck to give me the exact heading to steer that would take me and my shipmates safely to our final port of call.

The same is true in our Christian experience as we set sail across the stormy waters we know as life. We are at the helm of our ship, seeking to sail safely through to our final port of call….but fear, anxiety confusion and so much more cloud our vision and make the way treacherous….in fact, all too often we fail to even leave the safety of the harbor.

But Jesus said in His word that he would provide us an Officer of the Deck…one whose commands we could follow and obey…one who would be with us and guide our journey.
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7

The Holy Spirit is with you today as you take hold of the helm ….He has come to give you guidance and direction and to help you steer through the treacheries of life. The sailing will not always be smooth; your ship may be come battered and torn; you may want to turn around and return to the safety of the harbor….but you can trust the Officer of the Deck.

The Holy Spirit has made all the necessary calculations and he knows the waters, the currents and the ebb and flow of the tides. You can trust him to lead you to the calling that God has placed on your life. You can remain calm when seas toss you about and know that he can overcome any storm and lead you safely through to calm, still waters.

So, today ….get a firm grip on the helm of your life and listen intently for the voice of the Holy Spirit as he calls out the heading for today’s journey. It may be through uncharted waters or simply a shake down cruise that prepares you for a longer, more arduous journey…..but no matter the destination, you will arrive safely home...where you will be greeted by the Father’s loving arms and a whisper of …

“Well Done, my child….WELL DONE!”

R U SOLD OUT 4 JESUS?

One of my favorite miracles that Jesus performs early in His ministry occurs upon his return to his disciples’ hometown of Capernaum. He is probably relaxing at the home of Simon Peter, Matthew or James or John, the brothers of Zebedee.

As is typical, where Jesus went, large crowds followed as we read in Mark 2:1-5.

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by the four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

There are 5 things that we should examine regarding this miracle…..5 “C’s” that led this paralytic to end up in front of Jesus to be healed….

The first C is the CONCERN of the four that brought him to Jesus. These men knew their friend had a need for healing, perhaps both physical and spiritual.

Secondly, they were CONVICTED that Christ alone could meet their friend’s need. They had probably heard of the miraculous healings that were taking place across the region where Christ was ministering and teaching and they took it upon themselves to get him to Jesus.

Thirdly, they had CONSECREATED themselves to the task at hand and to seeing that their friend had an audience with Jesus…they were “sold out” to overcoming anything that might hinder or stand in their way of having Jesus meet the need of this friend…they had sold out to serving their friend unconditionally in seeking Jesus.

The fourth C deals with both their CREATIVITY, as well as their COOPERATION. The door was blocked and no one was leaving. I’m sure that people were peering through the windows and the way in looked insurmountable….so they looked up and decided the roof was their best plan of attack. But without the cooperation of all four men, it would have been impossible to carry their friend to the roof, dig through and then lower him down in front of Jesus….and then the best part of the miracle happens...

Scripture tells us. “When Jesus saw their faith,” he says to the paralytic, “My son, your sins are forgiven….” And after, chastising the religious scribes for their cynical and hypocritical hearts, Jesus tells the paralytic to take up his bed and go home.

Yes, the paralytic picked up his bed and the fifth “C” happened. He, and most likely his four friends were CONVERTED…..They knew that they had experienced God first-hand for verse 12 says, “And he rose up immediately, picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

I’m sure that no one was more amazed than the former paralytic and his four friends….they had come expecting to see Jesus and left glorifying God and proclaiming the miracle that God had done in their lives….so the question today is really quite simple.

Do you possess the faith of the friends so that you are sold out for Jesus and are willing to be concerned, convicted, consecrated, creative and cooperative to bring others to Jesus so that they may be converted by the love and the healing touch of Jesus?

What obstacles are standing in your way to being all that you can be for Jesus?

Take a moment today and ask God who can you carry to Jesus….He’s waiting to see your faith in action.

Working to be found a good and faithful servant,

K. I. S. S.

At sometime or at some point in our life, someone has told us to follow the advice of the acronym above….Keep It Simple Stupid….in fact, in more times than I like to recall that advice has been used on me. But today, I would like for us to see this acronym in a different light …I want us to KEEP IT SIMPLE SAINT.

For everyone that calls themselves a Christian, I fear that all too often we make the Christian life harder and more complicated than God ever intended….follow my thinking for just a moment and you might find yourself in agreement.

Too often, we make the Christian life about the Regiment and not the Relationship. We spend all of our time trying to go to church, attend men’s or women’s fellowships, become part of a couple’s Bible study or attend a mid-week prayer service and other church functions. This often leads to our failure to remember it’s about our relationship with our Savior and not our regiment of responsibilities.

Yes, we need to be immersed in the fellowship of a solid, Bible-believing, God-honoring Christian church; however, we should never substitute DOING for BEING….the life of a Christian is not about what we do, but who we are and who we are constantly becoming in Christ Jesus.

God (as always) said it best in Scripture through his prophet, Micah, who used the acronym, KEEP IT SIMPLE SAINT, when he wrote, “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

God has given us the triune of truth in this simple statement of how to please and honor Him….First, we are to act JUSTLY….to provide justice in all our dealings with all those that He brings into our lives. Simply put, DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!! And you might ask….What is the right thing? It is what Jesus would do if He were standing in your shoes; so the question in any situation is always, WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?

Secondly, God tells us to love mercy….to give more mercy than we receive. Jesus said it this way, “Love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:44

God, in His infinite mercy, has made a way for you to come back to a right relationship with Him through the shed blood of His Son….you are to do likewise…to offer mercy and restore broken relationships to wholeness through the love and compassion that is available in Jesus. And lastly…..

You are to walk humbly with your God….and why would you ever begin a journey of a lifetime with someone you don’t know personally? God has called each of us to sainthood….to becoming more like Jesus every step, every day…In every moment, in every way; we are to mimic Christ so that when others see us, THEY SEE JESUS!!!!!

Your life today can be made richer and fuller in Christ if you will just heed the words of Micah and learn to KEEP IT SIMPLE SAINT….Let go of the routines, the rituals and start working on the RELATIONSHIP ….Jesus is waiting for you to draw closer to him by following these three simple steps….love justice, love mercy, love Jesus.

Living for Jesus…Drawing closer to Him,

Thought for the Day:

Father, it is through your Spirit
We are filled with your love and power.
Please make us more like Jesus
Each day and every hour.

Keep us humble in our daily walk
May our journey be in this…
We long to honor Jesus
When we simply abide in K.I.S.S.

Living On The Sidelines?

There are many Christians in our world today that are living on the sidelines of life. They have given their hearts to the Lord, asked for forgiveness and been “born again”; but it is at that point where their growth stops and complacency begins.

They are playing it safe…not venturing too far from the safe harbor of church, home and family. They have heard the Great Commission, but somehow have determined that it doesn’t apply to them. Their witness is lukewarm at best; their motto being, “No harm, No foul!” They applaud the good works of others, but seldom look for opportunities to share their faith and be counted for God in a world that is increasingly hostile.

Christ had something important to say about this in Matthew 16:24-26, “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come with me, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What will it benefit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?”

In other words, playing it safe just won’t cut it for God! He is calling each of us out of our “comfort zones” and challenging us to take up our cross and live a life for Him.

Sure, there will be hardships, trials, set-backs, disappointments and calamities….but where’s the profit in playing it safe and missing out on all that God has promised those who faithfully seek His will and walk in obedience. Christ told us that He came to give us L I F E….So, what are you exchanging for the life that Christ has promised?

There is a payoff to the rest of this passage in Matthew as Christ continues in the next verse, “For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of the Father….and then He will REWARD each according to what he has done.”

How you live; what you do for Christ and His Kingdom; the willingness to lose your life in obedience to Him….all these will determine what Christ and His angels bring with them as your reward. So, take a good look at your life…do you like what you see? Are you losing your life in Christ? Have you forsaken all and taken up the cross of Christ?

There’s an old saying that applies to any contest that says, “YOU CAN’T WIN UNLESS YOU ENTER…..and that surely applies to life. You can not be all that God wants you to be; you can not accomplish all that God wants you to do; you can not live the life that God desires for you…living on the sidelines.

You’ve got to get in the game, mix it up and trust that God will make all things work out for good as you love Him and seek His face. Lose your life in Him and you’ll come out the winner… It’s a PROMISE you can believe ….and a life that’s well worth living….

Remember…YOU’VE GOT TO ENTER TO BE A WINNER…. For Jesus is coming again soon and He will be bringing the reward you have earned ….are you ready and waiting on the sidelines …or are you working for His return?

The choice is yours ….the answer is eternal!

Counting the days…watching the eastern sky,

WPQ

Thought for the Day:

For all who call on Jesus’ name
We believe this simple fact.
He’s gone to prepare for us a place,
But soon, HE’S COMING BACK!

He’s coming with His angels
To reward those He calls His own…
Then we’ll all ascend to Heaven
To worship Him around His throne.

What’s Your Sign?

Got a Sign?

A few years ago, if you happened to pass through our neighborhood and rode down our street, you would have noticed a rather large yellow and red sign in our front yard that read, “FOR SALE BY OWNER” and in smaller letters underneath, “Brokers Protected.” It was there for one purpose…to let all who passed by know that we were trying to sale our home.

But it also lets those in the real estate business know that if they were to bring us a buyer, we would pay them a commission. Why is that important? Simply put, it increased our sales force and heightened our chances of selling our home. Now, we could have tried to sell our home in a number of ways, but we started with the obvious; a sign in the front yard….and that brings me to our thought for today.

Each of us puts out a sign regarding our life each day…it tells others what we believe, in whom we believe and how we intend to live out those beliefs. Jesus shared that thought with His disciples that last night in the Upper Room when He said, “A new command I give you: LOVE ONE ANOTHER. As I have loved you, you must now love one another. By this (sign) all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 (enclosure, my emphasis)

Jesus gave his disciples a parting command which if they followed would let the whole world know their intentions….it would tell everyone that they belonged to Jesus. This would be the sign to the entire world of that time that these men were committed to their Lord and Savior…..this would tell the world of the love of Jesus.

The same holds true for us today. We let others know what we believe about Jesus by the way we love….not only those who are like us but even more, those with whom we differ. The sign that announces to a lost and hurting world who lives and reigns in our heart is the outward manifestation of the love we show each other as Christians and the love we express to others….it’s just that simple!

If we love each other as Christ commanded on that last night, our love might just be the directional sign that points them to Jesus and to a life brand new. Think about it the next time someone ask you for a little bit of your time to help them with a problem or a project…love them by helping them and point them to Jesus. Or if someone is lost and feeling hopeless, lend an ear or open your purse strings …be a beacon of God’s love and let them know that God cares for them and sent His Son as a ransom for their redemption.

Yes, you can be a small yard sign or major billboard for Jesus ….the choice of obedience is yours….trust Jesus to teach you how to love unconditionally and become the sign that directs all you meet to come and know their Heavenly Father.

Choosing to Love….Signing Others to Jesus,

WPQ

Thought for the day:

More like Jesus that is my plea.
More like Jesus so others will see;
The love of my Savior flowing through me
More like Jesus is all I long to be.

Looking Homeward

I don’t know about you, but my year of 2011 is off to a pretty rough start. It seems that no matter which direction my family or I turn, obstacles and trials block our path and obstruct our view of the things that lie ahead.

I suppose that is just the course of life …troubles come and troubles go. In fact, Scripture tells us in no uncertain terms that we will encounter trials, troubles, even persecution in the living of our lives. James 1: 2 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you face trials of many kinds because you know the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”

Notice the writer here did not say “if” trials come, but “when” trials come. You see, trials are part of the enormity of life….we all have them and we all must deal with them…each in our own unique way; but for a Christian facing trials, the bar has been raised. We are to consider it ….JOY!!!!!!

Now, does that mean we are to be giddy and bubbly when we encounter hard times? Certainly not; however, we are to take comfort, find peace or even encounter joy in the journey. For as His chosen, we know our Guide and we know that Jesus has gone before us in every trial or trouble we might face….So we can press on by looking homeward.

Yes, we must do as our Savior did when pressed on all sides…when in Hell, He kept his eyes on Heaven…when surrounded by His enemies, He focused on His Father and the Father’s will….and when all had forsaken Him, He kept looking forward to the promise of home and His rightful seat at the right hand of the Heavenly Father.

Today, all things may come against you; you may be betrayed, defamed and ridiculed. You may feel that all the planets are aligned against you; you may be cornered and hemmed in on all sides…..so what shall you do….REJOICE….and look homeward for help, sustenance and your measure of perseverance that is given to those who diligently seek to serve the Lord.

Look homeward and see the Savior …seated by the Father ….and your strength will be renewed and joy will overflow as you think of all He has done for you.

Looking Homeward …Persevering with Joy,
WPQ

Thought for the Day:

Father in heaven please grant me
When faced by earthly foes;
A spirit that will not tremble
And be undone by earthly woes.

Let me cast my eyes toward heaven
To see you seated on your Throne…
Lord, grant me joy and perseverance
And may I never walk alone.

Falling Down

If you live in any state other than Florida, the last several days you have been dealing with inches or layers of snow and ice….and even if you were totally prepared for this ginormous snow event; snow and ice can be hazardous to your health.

I know if which I speak….for on Tuesday morning, I left the comfort of my hotel room in Myrtle Beach, to make a quick dash to my car to retrieve a business card I needed. Unfortunately, I failed to heed that old saying, “Look before you leap” or “haste makes waste” or quite possibly a hundred other sayings. Anyway, I flung open the exit door of the hotel, wrapped my jacket tightly around me to fight off the bitter wind and lowered my head as I began my sprint to my car, parked about twenty yards away. I had barely stepped off the curb, when my feet began to do a Mexican hat dance, only without the hat! I began swinging my arms in wildly, erratic circular motions in a concentrated effort to keep my feet on the ground and my posterior region off of the pavement. In what seemed like forever, I fought the laws of gravity and inertia with all my might and thought that I might be winning; then, SPLAT…THUMP…OOOUUUUCCCCHHH….I realized that gravity had won and it was more than my pride that had been wounded.

I slowly sat up, purveyed my body and all its working parts and then proceeded to reestablish myself as an upright homosapien. I took a calculated moment and began to take a closer look at the pavement that was once again under my feet and realized that I was standing on that dreaded demon, BLACK ICE! Needless to say, I cautiously made my way across the rest of the parking lot, got what I needed from my car and returned to the warmth and safety of my room…..and that got me to thinking.

Sin’s an awful lot like that black ice…it just seems to come at us out of nowhere and then, WHAM, BAM….our life has been marred or forever changed by our fall into sin.

Sure, we look around and all seems to be fine. Life is moving forward and we seem to have our act together…we know what to do and most of the time, we do it! But sin has its way of making the commonplace look dull and the worldly way seem reasonable and well within our grasp. I mean, look at Eve’s dilemma; the apple looked like all the others, only more delicious, appealing and within her grasp….so she took a bite and the fall of mankind began.

Scripture tells us, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” James 4:17 (my emphasis)

You see, God’s not sitting there with a great big checklist of sins (although the Ten Commandments are there for our clarification of what’s right over what’s wrong), waiting to hit us with a thunderbolt when we mess up and sin. He’s placed within each of us a conscience that speaks to us, loudly, clearly and constantly….encouraging us to make the right choice, thereby avoiding sin and the complications that sin brings.

The problem for all too many of us is that we have turned off the receiver, shut down the speakers and thrown out the equipment that God could use to keep us from and to steer us clear of sin….and unfortunately, this holds true for many of us that call ourselves Christians.

Yes, sin is easy to fall into….just like slipping on the ice. We may think that we are more than careful and that sin is no longer a big problem now that we belong to Christ…and it shouldn’t be; for now we have the clear, unconstrained voice of the Holy Spirit to speak to us about such matters and to encourage us to walk the walk and talk the talk….

But…
If you see injustice, turn your head and walk away…you’ve sinned.
If you see corruption and remain silent…you’ve sinned.
If you hear unfounded rumor but fail to correct….you’ve sinned.
If you should share the love of Christ, but you slip silently away…..

Then, remember this…..Our God is a gracious, loving and forgiving God and when you call on Him…. He will always pick you up when you fall down!

Does God Really Exist?

There is a story of 14 year old son who goes to his dad and ask..."Dad, I need to ask you a question and I need for you to please be real honest with me. Remember when you talked so much about Santa when I was younger and then later revealed that there was no such person as Santa Claus. And remember how you and Mom played up the tooth fairy; how you always made such a big deal about the shiny new quarters she would leave behind….then later, you told me that the tooth fairy didn’t exist. So Dad, shoot straight with me and tell me, does God really exist? I really need to know the truth!"

The truth to this question has hounded men since the beginning of time and still seems to perplex, confuse and frustrate many today. Maybe you have struggled with this question and still have never been completely and totally satisfied with the answers given…does God REALLY exist?

Some people would have you believe that you must be small-minded, dim-witted or a lazy and childish thinker to believe there is someone out there that is “pulling the strings and making the world go round.” They would try to convince you that believing in God is like believing in Santa or the Tooth Fairy…okay for children and make-believe fantasy. But, mature-minded thinkers must put away childish thinking and face this cold, sullen world on its terms…Without hope for the future, help in the present or forgiveness for the past.

Others would have you view God and his existence as a crutch to lean on because you are too weak to make it on your own. If only you would elevate your belief system to see that God is within each of us and we have within ourselves the ability to change this world for the better by our actions and our thoughts….for each of us are God and need not answer to anyone else for our actions or their consequences.

But what does the Bible say about the condition of this world and the fate of man…where is there clarity in answering this powerful question?

In Romans, Paul writes in chapter one, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Romans 1:18-21

God has revealed himself to mankind….and all you have to do is look around at the world and all He has made….each morning comes with a sunrise; the tide goes in and the tide goes out; in nine months, an egg and a sperm unite to form a perfect little baby….and the list of a million upon million things that He has created give proof-positive that God is; therefore, GOD EXIST!!!!!!

It is the small-minded, sinful nature of man that seeks to declare that God does not exist…and God is okay with that….not in the sense that He wants mankind to perish for their evil and sinful ways; but rather that He has provided a way for us to know him personally …through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. The choice, however, is totally up to you!

If you’re not sure today that God exist, then I challenge you to OPEN YOUR EYES and look around at this incredible world…with all its faults and failures, it is still a magnificent place …and then, I challenge you to meet the Creator by getting down on your knees and asking Jesus to come into your heart….

Challenge God to make himself REAL to you TODAY…. He is just waiting to meet that challenge and to prove that He is, was and always will be …GOD OF THE UNIVERSE....NOW, LORD OF YOUR HEART!!!!!

Coming Soon?

I was deeply saddened last night when I watched a clip from the 11 o’clock news about a so- called Christian group in California that is placing billboards around the country that read, “ HE IS COMING BACK…MAY 21, 2011.”

I am saddened that the movement's leader, Harold Camping, says he has determined the exact date for The Rapture through his own interpretation of the Bible. My qualm with this comes directly from scripture.

When Christ was asked by his disciples to let them in on the end of the age, he tells them in Matthew 24 the things that will transpire before the second coming of the Lord. There will be wars, rumors of wars, famine, earthquakes, pestilence and great tribulations against the chosen of God….but he says these are just the birth pains…and then, Christ gives them the true prophetic word regarding Daniel’s prophecy of the abomination of desolation and tells them that unless those tumultuous times are cut short, all mankind will perish.

In Matthew 24: 29-31, 36, Christ gives us all the final word on his glorious return, when he says, “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call and they will gather the elect form the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. But concerning that day and hour NO ONE KNOWS, not even the angels of heaven, nor the SON, but the FATHER ONLY.” (My emphasis)

Did you catch all that? No matter how devoted a believer, how well-versed or learned you may be as a Bible scholar or how sincere you may be in your worship and adoration of the Father and His Son….You nor I WILL NEVER KNOW the day, the hour, the second of His return….if God won’t tell His only begotten Son, why would he tell a preacher in California?

So what can we take away from this….to live in fear and uncertainty that stifles us or to be constantly striving to be prepared for a quick exit …Jesus has promised that He is coming again to gather those who belong to Him and though He does not know the time or day, I am sure that He is anxiously waiting for the sound of the trumpet and the loud voice of the archangel to announce that He is coming in all His glory to gather His own.

So don’t be mislead or sidetracked by false prophets or those who might claim to have received a “heavenly visit or vision” regarding the coming of our Lord….that precious secret is safe…Safe in the perfect will of the Father….at just the perfect time, CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN TO RECEIVE HIS OWN….

My prayer today is that you are one of HIS and you are prepared for His return.

Poem for the Day:
Starting each and every day
With the breaking of the sun;
Knowing Jesus could return
Before my day is done…

So I will spend each moment
Living in such a way…
That all will know I’m heaven bound
If this should be the day!

Ingesting God’s Word

For the last several days, I have been fighting a terrible earache and nasal infection; so I have taken waaayyyy too many pills for pain and congestion relief. Subsequently, my stomach has been terribly upset and on edge.

It was during this time that I saw a commercial for the yogurt, Activia. You know the one….where the lady tells you that if you will eat Activia yogurt for at least 14days in a row, then your digestive tract will achieve gastronomic nirvana….and she says it so convincingly that you want to jump up off of the couch and rush over to the store and get some….but I didn’t because I’m really not much of a yogurt guy.

Now, I know that yogurt is good for you; nutritious and packed with all those active cultures that can help regulate your digestive system; but, it seems like a lot of work to eat that stuff for 14 days to reap the full benefit….and that got me thinking.

As Christians, too often we treat God’s Holy word like yogurt….we know it’s extremely good for us; calms our spirit during stressful times, settles our nerves. It is helpful to our overall well-being in determining God’s direction for our lives….but it sure seems like a lot of work to take time from our busy lives to sit down and spend time in God’s word.

Paul spoke to young Timothy regarding this matter of spending time in God’s Holy Scriptures in 2 Timothy 3:16-17,“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

Paul knew first-hand that the desire to live for Christ would be fraught with many trials and tribulations. He knew that a young pastor such as Timothy would not stand up well to the tests that were to come without first sitting down in a consistent and committed manner to study the infallible word of God. Paul knew there was much to be gained from spending time in God’s word….just like eating the yogurt, good things will take place in the body of the sanctified believer…By ingesting the Spirit-breathed word of God, intellectual stimulation and belief affirmation will occur (teaching); review and recalculation will take place as the believer seeks to draw closer to God (reproof/correction) and my favorite…training in righteousness…learning to be more like Jesus.

Why all this you might ask?

So we will know what we’re talking about when we encounter our culture…..competent in our faith and in our daily walk with our Lord and Savior…prepared and EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK that the Lord has laid before each of us.

Make this your New Year’s motto….THE MORE I GET INTO GOD’S WORD THE MORE GOD’S WORD GETS INTO ME!!!!!!

Make the resolution to start EVERY DAY by ingesting the word of God…reading a daily devotion that is scripture-based; doing a bible study of a particular book of God’s word on your own; reading and memorizing scripture from the back of a 3x5 index card; reading the Bible through in a year….or any one of a thousand ways that God leads you into opening life’s manual…THE HOLY BIBLE….the Spirit-breathed revelation of God to man.

Get the New Year off to a Great start….opening God’s Holy Word …Daily. You will be...
