Our Purpose for Living

Living in the now is hard for a lot of God’s people …what with our world’s infatuation with gathering and storing and saving for our old age. It seems that hoarding has become part of the standard thinking of the rich and the “wanna be” rich. Now, I for one can empathize with this thought process, being one of the “baby boomers” who has been suckled with the idea that if I am going to live a long and satisfying life, I better stockpile lots of “goodies’ to see me through my senior years.

But, let’s look at this from a Biblical perspective. This life is really just a dress rehearsal for the eternity that I will spend with my Heavenly Father …at home in the New Jerusalem. In fact, my entire purpose for living is to prepare me for eternity …to have me practice on earth what I will perfect in heaven. Now eternity, that’s a LOOOONNGGGG TIME according to 2 Peter 3:8 which says, “But do not overlook this one fact, Beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day." God’s calendar is different than yours and mine…I may live to be a hundred here on earth, but I’m going to spend a trillion years in eternity and that requires that I get my eye on the prize while I’m here.

Each of us was made by God….and for God. God did not put us here to make us happy, but to make us HOLY…and that’s the struggle of life. Until we get that thought at the center of our consciousness, we’re probably going to spend our time and efforts in pursuing the wrong things of this world….and those “things” lead to our destruction. Sure, we all want to be successful, fulfilled and comfortable both now and in our “retirement” years; but God is more interested in your CHARACTER than in your comfort.

So, where does that leave us? Do we listen attentively to the noise from the crowd that tells us to “grab all we can” since we only “go around once in life”…or do we heed the Savior’s call to “take up our cross and follow him.” If your life is not facing some sort of difficulty, then maybe it’s time to check your Christian pulse and see if your really have a heartbeat for the Savior? Truly, it’s okay to want to be reasonably happy here on earth; to face a minimal amount of desperation or despair….but, remember, God is more interested in your growth in Christ than the size of your home or the value of your IRA. If you’re working for the Kingdom then trust me, opposition is near-at-hand….but that’s okay! 1 John 4:4 says, “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for He that is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

So start living for the eternity that God has promised you and leave behind the cares and troubles that so easily beset us….Today is the first day of the rest of your eternity ….at home with Jesus and our Father of Love.

Letting go of today…Reaching for eternity,
WPQ

Thought for Today:
God brings life’s struggles not to impair us…but to improve us;
Life’s catastrophes not to impound us…but to EMPOWER us for HIS GLORY!

Living LARGE

Here it is two weeks from my 59th birthday and boy, am I thankful. You see, last week, I got to play golf twice in one week …a real treat for a former golf professional; however, I do remember how sore I was the day after my second round. I mean, even the few hairs on my head where sore and I seemed to ache in places I had forgotten I had.

Now, I am not complaining as I am sometimes prone to do; rather stating fact that as we get older, the things that once we did so easily may cause us some discomfort if we over indulge. Someone once said that “Age is a state of mind” and “You are only as old as you feel”…well, last week, I felt pretty old and my mind seemed to focus on that ….which left me in a pretty sad state.

Until I read a scripture in Psalms 90: verses 10 & 12, “ The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone and we fly away….So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”

That’s what we each need as we grow older and our bodies begin to let us down….A HEART OF WISDOM. We need to number our days and make each one count for our Lord. He has set before us a task or a good work that only we can accomplish and we can’t let a failing body or a slowing mind keep us from doing what God has purposed us to accomplish for His Kingdom. So be wise in the way you treat your body….give it good nutrition, plenty of sleep, appropriate exercise and above all, ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

The poem that follows is for all of you that need to keep pushing ahead …..IN SPITE OF what lies ahead or has happened in the past, keep

Living LARGE,
WPQ

IN SPITE OF...

All my life, how I loved to play
I'd be out the door at the break of day;
Goin' fishin' or swimmin' or joggin’ ‘round the track;
I always aimed to get ahead by not lookin' back.

I was smart and eager and always willin' to try
To prove to others I was a really "great guy."
I could leap tall buildings in a single bound;
No nothing in this world was gonna keep me down.

But lately I've noticed I get really short of breath
Walkin' cross the room to turn on the TV set;
And my arms aren't as long as they might need to be
If I want to read the sports page while I watch TV.

Yeah, I used to primp after every morning shower
Combin' and blow dryin’ for nearly half an hour;
But those days are gone; they were really quite a drag;
I accomplish the same thing...but now I use a wash rag.

I used to love to shoot hoops or beat a punchin' bag;
But where I once had muscles; well, it's all turned to flab.
So, I've tried these diets that they say are the rage;
But to keep me from food, you have to lock me in a cage.

My spirit's sturdy and I've still got my nerve,
But where I once had lines, they've all turned to curves;
My hearing's fadin' and my handshake's not as hearty;
I'm just a young man trapped in an old man's body.

So, let me say to you guys who face the ravages of time...
Sit back, relax and with this thought sublime;
Prop up your feet, while you sip your favorite toddy...
BE A YOUNG MAN ALWAYS...in spite of an old man's body.

Welcome Home Soldiers

It is not my desire to use this space as a political stump, to voice my political opinions or in any way push my opinion as anything more than that…MY OPINION; but in the next few weeks, during the party conventions, both sides will use our military forces as pawns in their battle for the Presidency. Each side will try to get you to agree with them regarding our presence in foreign countries where our brave soldiers are defending the freedoms that we hold so dear. They will tell you that the job is finished and we should bring them home or that until there is peace and tranquility in that region, we will never be safe from acts of terrorism. Either way, the results is our young men and women are caught in a political crossfire and they will never receive the recognition and gratitude that is due them for their heroic efforts upon the battlefield.

Don’t, I repeat, DON’T let the emotions of a star-studded cast of politicians divert your attention from the great work our military has done during their time in the battlefields of the Middle East. God is at work and we in America have been called to help defend His land, Israel. To be sure that stand will be costly, but God is on our side. HE WILL NOT BE DEFEATED!

Please make this upcoming election about who is on the Lord’s side and who is willing to stand and be counted as a protector of God’s ordained people. He is drawing them unto Himself so that the history of the ages will play out on the stage that God is preparing. We see God proclaim His coming salvation in Psalms 52 and confirm that He will be with His people and that He will be their God in Revelation 21: 3. The time is coming quickly upon us to stand and be counted for the Lord.

But in all of this, please take time to honor our brave men and women as they begin to return home to their families and loved ones. They have sacrificed greatly so that you and I can sleep peacefully each night ….they deserve, no their devotion demands, that we honor them, praise then and thank them for their devotion to duty and to their willingness to stand in harm’s way to protect us and the liberties that have made this country great….all because God’s favor is upon us. Let’s not do anything else that might take the hand of His mercy from our country and plunge us into a season of regret.

To our returning soldiers …GOD BLESS YOU EACH AND EVERY ONE…the poem that follows is for YOU!

Proudly serving … following His orders,
WPQ

WELCOME HOME

Welcome home, soldiers proud
Together, strong we stand
Defending freedom around the world
From this bright and promised land

Called to do your duty
To sacrifice for all
You proudly wear the uniform
For freedom, you stand tall.

You gave upon the battlefield
Your blood, your sweat and tears
And stood against the Evil ones
Who filled our lives with fear?

And now though spent, the battle won
Your respite is close at hand
As you return to freedom’s breast
To this great and glorious land;

We applaud you…we shout with joy
We immortalize this day
Welcome Home… Dear Patriots
To the good old U.S.A.

With Heartfelt Thanks We Salute Those Who Gave Their Best…
May God Bless You Every Day And Grant You His Sweet Rest!!!!!

Living Beyond the Pain

“Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal” is a quote from the #1 best seller on the New York Times Bestseller List, entitled, THE SHACK, by William P. Young.

Several weeks ago, I came in contact with a woman that was reading this book as she sat in the waiting room at our dentist’s office. She began to share with me the story line of this fictional novel and I must confess it piqued my interest. So, while shopping at Sam’s, I picked the book up and once I began to read it, I could not put it down until I had finished it. It was truly captivating in its subject matter; in fact, the byline after the title is …..WHERE TRAGEDY MEETS ETERNITY. …and that my friend is something we all struggle with…trying to understand why bad things happen to God’s people.

Though a fictional account of a tragic murder of a young girl and the father’s anguish in dealing with this great loss,this story is one that will stir every heart string and touch you in the deep crevasses of your soul. Who, in this great big world, has not been touched by some seemingly senseless tragedy and not ask God….WHY? This book and its story line make a valiant effort to help us understand the heart of God and the work of the Godhead in our lives when we face insurmountable sorrow. Each page seems to offer hope and encouragement that we are not alone in our grief….rather the Father, His Son and the Holy Spirit are there to walk with us through the darkest valleys and to love us in the midst of unspeakable horror.

Though this is a work of fiction, the author is solid in his portrayal of a loving God who DOES NOT DO EVIL, BUT WILL USE EVIL FOR HIS (and our) GOOD. Here is a quote from someone who was touched by this little book:

THE SHACK” is a one of a kind invitation to journey to the heart of God. Through my tears and cheers, I have been transformed by the tender mercy with which Wm. P Young opened the veil that too often separated me from God and from myself. With every page, the complicated do’s and don’ts that distort a relationship into a religion were washed away as I understood the Father, Son and Spirit for the first time in my life.”
Patrick M. Roddy, Emmy Award winning producer for ABC News

The accolades go on and on; but let me say from one who loves to write and adores the written word, this book will have a profound effect on your outlook as well as helping you to trust your UPLOOK…..God is in control ….even if you can’t see His hand at work, trust that He cares for you. You may never understand why bad things happen in this world of sin and strife, but you can always know that God is with you and is working EVERYTHING OUT FOR YOUR GOOD…..HE LOVES YOU AND ME THAT MUCH!!!!!

If you can ….get this book, read it and pass it on. Someone you know needs to know that the God we love and serve is hurting with them. He is waiting to help them to deal with the pain, the grief and the sorrow if they will only do what the Scriptures says….“Casting all your cares on Him, for He cares for you.” 2 Peter 5:7

Living in the Healing Arms of God,
WPQ

In The Palm of His Hands

When life's full of disappointments
And no one seems to care,
Just lift your eyes toward heaven
See the Savior waiting there;

To lift your heavy burdens;
To help you bear life's load,
Just place your trust in Jesus
As you travel down life's road.

For He gave up heaven's glory
To become as you and I
To walk this barren, earthly realm
To live...to love...to die.

So no matter what you're feeling...
Be it sorrow, joy or pain,
Just place your trust in Jesus
And heaven you will gain.

For in life's travels you might see
Just one pair of footprints in the sands;
Remember then, He carried you
In the palm of His nail-scarred hands.

Thank You, Father

My wife and I attend a wonderful church here in Travelers Rest, S.C., Clearview Baptist Church. It is a wonderfully warm and hospitable fellowship that seeks to honor God and be true to His Great Commission.....but yesterday, by anyone's account, something strange and wonderul happened. In the midst of the morning worship service, a renewal broke out. After the singing of one of the choir's favorite songs,TESTIFY, our worship minister passed the mic through the choir for anyone that wanted to give a word of testimony. Now, we have done this before, but never with the same results. The Holy Spirit swept in and the entire congregation began to share in prayer and song and testimony and this continued the ENTIRE WORSHIP SERVICE....people at the altar praying for their brothers and sisters in Christ ....for healing, troubled homes and marriages, burdens of sorrow and grief and only God knows what else. It was ELECTRIFYING to see the Holy Spirit shower us with His presence and see God at work in our midst. The pastor never even got a chance to deliver his message....God's work was far more important and our pastor led us in a time of consecration and renewal that will and already has had a profound effect on all of us. For that I can only say, "THANK YOU, FATHER."

My prayer for each of you this week is that God will manisfest Himself through the power of the Holy Spirit in your life and you will seek to walk in His ways to bring...

PRAISE AND HONOR AND GLORY TO THE KING OF KINGS!

Blessed and Believing,
WPQ

Thank You Father

Thank you, Father, for the sun and the rain;
Thank you, Father, for life’s joys and its pain.
Thank you, Father that you sent your Son,
Thank you, Father, for the victory won.

The life that was spared on Calvary’s tree
Was a life that was worthless- O’ how you love me.
You send your Son to take my place;
I’m awed and amazed at your saving grace

Thank you, Father for a life that was spent,
Thank you, Father for the time to repent.
Thank you, Father for dying for me;
Thank you, Father, now I am set free!

Free to walk with my head held high,
To claim my mansion in the sweet by and by;
To know your love now fills any soul
You’ve taken me broken and made me whole.

Thank you, Father, what more can I do
Than to show my love in worship of you?
I’ll give my life so others will see
My Christ, My Savior….always living in me!

RUNNING THE GOOD RACE

My wife and I just finished our study of Philippians and I was once again reminded of “running the good race” In fact, watching the Olympics this last week has definitely reinforced that concept.

Now I, for one, am a great admirer of the young talented sprinters that compete to see who can cross the finish line in the shortest amount of time. As a young child and even into my adult years, I was always considered to be pretty fast for a “white guy with short legs.”….so I love to watch the track portion of the games. In using my keen eye of observation and listening to the commentators, I realized there are three major parts to a race….getting out of the blocks,(the start), running hard through the straight-aways (the middle) and exploding with the “kick” at the finish (the end).\

Paul tells us in Philippians 3:13-14, “Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it on my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” It is clear in these few short lines that Paul has set the tone for the race that he calls life.

And……The race begins anew each day…..

Getting out of the blocks is so important for that sets the tone for the rest of the race. For us as Christians that begins by starting the day by communicating with our Heavenly Father…we talk to Him and He, through His ordained word, talks to us. If you want to begin to run the race that presses on to the high calling that God has set before you…you’ve got to get off to a great start each day. Start your daily walk with a time of fellowship with Jesus and you will be out of the blocks with great speed, stamina and serenity.

The next portion of the race is where many falter….Running hard through the straight-aways. Its here, in the trenches, where our enemy lulls us in to thinking we can meet all the demands of home, work, church and life in general on our own. We can and should take care of our problems and only bother God when we can’t seem to handle the matter by ourselves. This kind of thinking will slow you down and cause you to lose valuable time and energy in the race to claim the prize that God has laid before each of us. God wants to be intimately involved in your life, but He will not intrude. Invite him in by talking with Him about all the hopes, dreams, mistakes, failures and everything else that affects your desire to remain close and to follow His leading in you daily activities. He is with you in all things and is cheering you on as you make the turn toward home.

And last, but surely not least is that “Exploding Kick” ….an all out sprint for the finish line and the opportunity to stand on that podium and receive you prize…for an Olympian, a gold medal….for a child of The KING…YOUR CROWN. But that winner’s podium is reserved for those that finish well. Paul says it best when he tells us to “strain forward”, to lean into the finish line of what God has set before you. Too many Christians become complacent with their past accomplishments or too saddened by past failures and they quit …..just short of God’s finish line for their life. Run to the end of the race.

Don’t let your past dictate the outcome of your race ….Run the good race and finish strong for the Lord. Others are watching and many will copy what you do ….so run hard, stay the course and strain for the prize; then you can stand proudly on the podium and hear the cheers of the heavenly throng as you receive you crown and give honor and glory and praise to Him that sits on the throne…the Author and Finisher of our Faith.

Running to win the prize,
WPQ

A NEW THING

Your memory is a BAD THING….let me explain. For most of us, our memories function relatively well. We remember our first days as a child, trips to the beach or fun parks, care-free summers, our first date or first kiss…and the list goes on. But, for far too many of us, our memories continue to remind us of our past, with all its faults and failures.

In fact, too often it is the weight of our past failures that keep us from moving ahead…or if we have had some measure of success, it is that memory that keeps us anchored to the past with little or no vision for the future. Neither mindset is pleasing to our Lord.

If you have failed miserably, sinned immensely or are just plain tired of carrying around the baggage of your past, GET OVER IT. If, in your past, you have been successful in a venture for the Lord and you are still wrapped up in those “glory days, “ reliving them with the relish of days gone by….DROP THEM LIKE A HOT POTATOE.

IT’S TIME TO MOVE ON …..As scripture points out in Isaiah 43:18-19, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old…BEHOLD, I AM DOING A NEW THING; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

God is moving forward and He expects you to keep up; however, that will be impossible if every time He moves, you have to stop, pick up your baggage from the past and then follow Him. He has prepared the way…He knows what lies ahead…and even though it is true that we can and should learn from our past successes and failures, we cannot continue to carry so great a burden and expect to be effective for our Lord. LET GO….AND LET GOD should be our mantra as we look forward to the new thing that God has set before us.

For the past 7 weeks, I have been unemployed; but, I can already see that God is preparing to set my feet upon a new path to do a new thing…I have applied to be the women’s softball coach at a nearby Christian university and I covet your prayers that God will bring this to fruition. I can think of nothing greater than to work with young, scholarly women athletes as we train them in their sport and academics, but more importantly, instill in them the desire for a close, radiant walk with Jesus.

And if this is not the path that God has chosen for me, then I patiently await the new thing that will provide a way through the wilderness of my search for a new profession and for the abundance that God has promised to those who are called according to His purpose.

My prayer today for anyone that has been hindered by their past….RELEASE IT….LET IT GO…AND BE BLESSED BY A GOD OF SECOND CHANCES.

Even our Heavenly Father let’s go of the past. For in the scriptures, we are reminded in Lamentations that “His mercies never come to an end, they are NEW ….EVERY MORNING.”

Enjoy the new day by leaving your past were it belongs…..BEHIND YOU! God has and He’s moving on…..don’t keep Him waiting!

Enjoying His Mercies…Taking nothing for granted,
WPQ

JUST LIKE ME

I don’t know about you, but I often get the hankering for the world to be a better place; in fact, A PERFECT PLACE. I have given this a considerable amount of thought and have come to the conclusion that this could best be accomplished if every one was just like me.

Now, I am not always right, but I am seldom wrong. I always have the best intentions, although, things don’t always turn out the way I intended. I am generous to a fault as long as the sacrifice doesn’t hit to close to home….and I have been known to pay others a sincere compliment with no thought of what’s in it for me. That’s about as close to perfect as it gets….RIGHT?

I’m sure that by now, you know that all this is tongue-in-cheek….but isn’t it interesting to note that there are those who think, act and live as if this scenario above would make the world a perfect place. There is no hope that this will happen, yet many are living a life of strife and turmoil because they have not come to that conclusion….for those living in despair and hopelessness because the world will NOT conform to your ways, this poem is for you….

A PERFECT PLACE

Oh, how I wish the world to be
A perfect place for you and me.
A world where all is total bliss
‘Cause nothing ever is amiss.
For this to happen, we must agree
Everyone has to be just like me.

Then I would control what you wear
How you style and cut your hair;
What you eat and what you bake
And how you treat a stomach ache.
All debates would quickly end
And everyone would be my friend.

I’d gladly mandate your movie picks
And give you advice on your politics.
No loud music with boisterous beat,
No double parking on one-way streets.
I’d pick the songs that you could hum
And even choose your bubble gum.

All this I’d do and all for free
So everyone would be like me.

At church we’d sing my favorite songs
The pastor would preach on my favorite wrongs.
We’d start the service right on time
And I could leave and not spend a dime.
Yes, church would be the perfect dream
I’d get home in time to cheer my team.

Yes, all would share my point of view
And nothing would ever seem askew.
There’s not a problem that I see
If everyone were just like me …..
Just one small thing that dwells within
My ugly faults….God calls them sin.

So what’s a perfect world to do
When I’m a sinner and you are too;
To make this world what is should be
No one should ever be just like me.
A higher standard we must find
If we’re to be pure in heart and mind.

God’s plan is clear for us to know
He sent His Son, His love to show.
If we trust in Jesus, then we’ll see
Our sins were borne at Calvary;
With His perfect life He did atone
And now He reigns on heaven’s throne.

A perfect place one day we’ll see;
He’s coming back for you and me.

How sweet the song on that day we’ll sing
In praise and honor for our King;
Then you and I will know true bliss
Upon our cheek, our Savior’s kiss;
For there in glory, we shall see His face
At last…at home…in His Perfect Place.

LEAVING A LEGACY

I have a birthday that is quickly approaching in which I will be attaining the ripe older age of 69...not necessarily a milestone, but one I am proud of nevertheless. You see my father passed away at the age of 63 and I come from his gene pool, so for me, I count each higher number in my age progression to be a real blessing. Which got me to thinking about my departure from this world and the legacy that I will leave behind?

Now, my big ten pound dictionary defines the word LEGACY as follows: Anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor. Notice that it does not make any reference whether that which is past is good, bad or indifferent. But, the Bible teaches us considerably more when it comes to leaving a legacy.

Take Abraham, for instance, and think of the great legacy of faith and obedience that he left for his son, Isaac. Abraham had taken Isaac to the summit on one of the mountains in the land of Moriah and there, in an act of faith and obedience, was prepared to sacrifice his only son. Genesis 25, verse 5 says, “Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.” Everything material, but more important, all that he believed, the faith that he lived, the obedience that defined his life, he passed all that on to his beloved son, Isaac.

Or what about David, the great warrior king …the man after God’s on heart. What a great kingdom he left for Solomon; no wars to fight, rather a reign of peace and prosperity …and a burning desire to lead his people with great wisdom as they labored together to build the temple of God.
And the examples are countless throughout the Bible ….legacy after legacy; some great, some good, some not so good. Paul tells us in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Our good works will become our legacy….for what we do is who we become in Christ Jesus. He has redeemed us to do good works and to leave behind a legacy …GOOD OR BAD, YOUR LEGACY IS YOUR FINAL STATEMENT OF YOUR LIFE ON THIS EARTH.

Does your legacy point others to the Father? Do they see your good works and glorify the Lord? Do they emulate the life you lived or do they fall away and take the path that leads to destruction? A man’s legacy begins in his heart…..therefore; a man must guard his heart and mind in this perverse and evil world. For what he thinks soon becomes his words and his spoken words become his habits. Before he can realize the path he has chosen, his habits reveal his true and visible character and in the blink of an eye, his character has become his legacy…..and HIS LEGACY IS ETERNAL. Galatians 6:7 says it best, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that he will also reap.”

How’s your legacy shaping up? Better guard your heart, chose your words carefully and practice what you preach…after all, God’s watching and so is everyone else!

Leaving a legacy of love,

WPQ

Poem for the day....

Living in this treacherous world
Requires of every man....
To scrutinize the way he lives
And to do the best he can.

For in each and every step he takes
A  watching eye will see;
If he is living as he says he must
As he lives out his legacy...

So don't give into worldly lust
Or pride...or hate...or greed.
For one who lives for Jesus Christ
Has all that he will need...

To give his all in a live well lived
Where our Father receives the glory...
Will tell the world that we left behind
Our Legacy is His Story!!!

Taking Some Time Off

I will be taking some time off this week to spend some quality time with my wife and daugther and to attend an interview for a job on Wednesday. Please be in pray for me and this interview that all will go well and that God will be lifted up in any new endeavor that I begin. Also, we will be traveling on some short days trips and ask that you remember us as we travel. I look forward to returning next week, fully refreshed (and hopefully employed) and ready to share the insights that help each of us be SALT & LIGHT in our world. In leaving here is a poem to carry us through the week.

Blessed by Sharing the Bounty,
WPQ

A Love Sonnet

Simple words, elegant words,
So many I would to say
To express the feelings of my heart,
To help me count the ways.

To thank you for each sunrise
For each precious breath I’m given
To spend my eternity with you,
You prepared for me a heaven.

So, I thank you every day, my God
For the birds that soar in flight
And for the stars that fill my sky
And the moon that rules my nights.

You’ve given me a joyous heart
And laughter fills my days.
You’ve placed upon my very lips
My songs of endless praise.

I thank you that you listen, Lord
With an ear bent close to earth.
And that you sent your only Son
Through a Holy Virgin birth.

For it was there upon that cruel cross
Christ would die to take my place
I’m sure that as He breathed his last
The tears streamed down your face;

Not just for the loss of your precious son
But for the saving of my soul,
I offer my life as gratitude
For you love has made me whole.

Let me make my life an offering
To be laid at your throne above,
May all I do always honor you
My Father....it’s you
I Love!!!

REGARDING YOUR MARRIAGE

Today, I would like to speak to the husbands out there….regarding your marriage.

Now, speaking from experience let me say that my wife, Terri, and I have a wonderful marriage. I mean, after all, she is married to a pretty incredible guy….at least that’s what I keep telling her. But what works best in our marriage is the fact that Terri is an Ephesians wife, based on the scripture from Ephesians 5: 22-24. She has given herself to me in submission as an act of obedience to the Father….and I; I am committed to her as a husband that is to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. It is no small wonder that so many marriages seem to be facing rocky roads in these difficult and terrifying days. The Bible tells us exactly how we are to love and treat each other, but we don’t read the scriptures like we should and when we do; we fail to follow their godly instructions.

In Ephesians, Paul first admonishes the wife to submit herself to her husband, “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.” He then goes on in the very next verses to say, “Husbands love your wives as Christ love the church and gave himself for her.” And in verse 28-29, “In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.”

It is easy to see why Paul put the verses about a submissive wife first….she that is submissive is easier to love….but he never said that if she is not submissive this would in someway relieve the husband from his mandate to love his wife as he loves himself. If she submits, she is following biblical teaching, but if she does not, you’re to do what Christ would do for His church….love her UNCONDITIONALLY.

That’s a word that strikes fear into the heart of most men…unconditionally, without reservations. My love for Terri is not to be based on what she does for me …but rather, who she is….MY WIFE. And I am to love her, cherish her, protect her, empower her, admonish her, extol her, comfort her and be willing to give myself in any manner simply because she is my gift, my blessing from God.

Do you love your wife unconditionally and are you treating her in a way that shows how much you value her as your life-long mate? I hope that you’re not in the same boat as the examples that follow. Enjoy the levity that these provide, but if, by some remote chance, you find your self identifying with one of the husbands in these capulets…..IT’S TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE….love your wife with all your heart, body, mind and soul….YOU’LL BOTH BE GLAD YOU DID!!!

Blessed with the Best,

Levity goes along way

A Marriage Seminar

While attending a marriage seminar dealing with communication, Tom and his wife Grace listened to the instructor regarding how essential it was in a good relationship for each partner to know the others likes and dislikes. The instructor asked Tom, “Can you name your wife’s favorite flower? Tom leaned over, touched his wife’s arm and gently whispered, “It’s Pillsbury, isn’t it?”

Family ties

A couple drove down a long country road without saying a word. An earlier argument had lead to this deadly silence, neither party willing to concede their pronounced position. As they passed a barnyard filled with mules, goats and pigs, the husband quipped sarcastically, “Relatives of yours?” Came the wife’s quick reply, “Yep, in-laws!”

Remember ….God may have created man before woman, but there’s always a rough draft before the masterpiece.

SO, husbands..... Treat your wife as the masterpiece God created her to be and you both will be better for it…

A CHILD OF GOD

In Matthew 18: 1-4, we read, “At that time the disciples came to Jesus saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.”

Are you humble in your drive to be the greatest? Do you know what it means to have child-like faith in the Father and follow Jesus unconditionally? Are you headed for the kingdom of heaven? Read on and be blessed:

The following was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista, CA. He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to "explain God." I wonder if any of us could do as well if we were required to give our EXPLANATION OF GOD:

"One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn't have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers."

"God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off."

"God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have."

"Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren't any who come to our church."

"Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him; but he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K."

"His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important."

"You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time."

"You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God. Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong….and besides, the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway."

"If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids."

"But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases.

And that's why I believe in God."

I trust that today you won’t focus on just what God can do for you, but rather what YOU CAN DO FOR GOD…..AS A CHILD OF THE KING!

Blessed and believing,

LIVING THE ABUNDANT LIFE

Rules, guidelines, instruction, even commandments for living the abundant life are found throughout God’s Holy word….here are a few of mine that I have labeled,

SIGNPOSTS FOR SUCCESSFUL LIVING

Pray often and without ceasing …the repetitious child always has his father’s ear.

Go to bed at a reasonable time…with thanksgiving on your mind and praise on your lips.

Get up on time…ready to spend time with your Father and start your day unrushed.

Do all that you can ….don’t do all that can be done; delegate to others…that’s how they learn.

More is good, but less is better. Simplify and unclutter your life …joy is in the simple things.

Don’t fret the small stuff, it will soon get bigger and then you can worry if you must.

DON’T WORRY, rather trust God in everything…He’s in control. Worry is the Devil’s tool.

Live within your means and always be ready to bless others with your material wealth…God loves a cheerful giver.

If you must criticize or find fault in others, use the K.I. S. S. theory…Keep It Short & SWEET.

Eat what makes you happy …when you look in the mirror, you’ll have no one to blame but YOU.

Every day, take time to be alone with yourself….and with your Heavenly Father.

Make friends… but always seek out those Godly friends that stick closer than a brother.

Laugh and laugh often ….God’s greatest release from the cares of this world is in our ability to laugh in the face of adversity.

Laugh some more…especially at yourself. Take your strengths at face value and your weaknesses will be diminished.

Develop a forgiving spirit ….most people you encounter in life are doing the best they can.

Be kind and loving to unkind people…they’re the ones that need loving the most.

And most of all, remember…..God did not appoint you general manager of the universe….if He needs your help in running the world, HE’LL ASK. (But, I wouldn’t hold my breath!)

Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life and have it more ABUNDANTLY.” John 10:10

DEEP ROOTS

We live in a quiet neighborhood, right across the street from the community pool and playground. This area is meticulously groomed each week and is always in the best shape when it comes to the caliber of care that it receives. I guess that is why I was so surprised to see one of my favorite willow trees cut down and carted off last week. Now, to be sure it was dead, but what struck me as odd was its demise.

Now, there where two willow trees planted not fifteen feet apart and for the last five years, I have watched them grow and mature, ever spreading their lovely branches and providing a great place for young children to take shade from the hot summer sun….and that’s my point of consternation. One lived and one died; each, seemingly, planted in the same soil, given the same care and exposed to the same elements. But, upon closer examination, I found the difference ….one had been struck down by some insects while in a weakened condition from the drought…the other willow tree’s roots had found a greater source of water. You see, about six feet away, the sprinkler head had malfunctioned and had built a small pond in a low lying area. In fact, every time we get any rain, the water puddles there….so, the tree near the puddle got more water and nutrients and was able to remain strong while its next door neighbor succumbed to the drought, insects and other natural causes and died.

The lesson for us in all of this is found in Jeremiah 17:7-8,
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is in the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green and is not anxious in the year of the drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

How’s your root system today? Are you trusting in the Lord …is your trust in the Lord and not in what you can do? Are you firmly planted in His word so that the barbs and darts and arrows from the Devil have no effect on your life? God has promised in His Son, Jesus Christ, to NEVER leave us or forsake us. No matter what you are facing today, God is here to see you through. Let you roots sink deep into the well of everlasting water and be refreshed. Know the joy of your salvation is something that is yours now and eternally. Don’t let the devil or circumstances or others rob you of the joy and peace that is ours as we continually grow in the Lord.

WE BELONG TO HIM ….and we are to produce much fruit.

Today, give up the dry, barren way of following Christ…giving lip service and little else. Instead, look for a way to serve, offer a word of encouragement, do more than is required of you….Smile, tell someone you love them and back it up with your actions. God is the great gardener and He is watching to see if you are growing or if your roots have died and you should be cut down.

I pray that today you will be firmly planted, growing exponentially with roots that reach to the very soul of the Master and that your fruit will be bountiful for the Lord….

”He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:3

Planted together…prospering for the Kingdom,

Greater Than

Today's devotional thought was written last Friday afternoon. Yesterday, when we got home from Sunday morning worship, we were heartbroken to learn that one of our friends from our former church in Clayton, Georgia had just lost her 23 year old daughter in a tragic car accident. This thought for today is dedicated to Miley Duvall and to her family; mom and dad, Connie and Jeff and to younger brother, Louie.

May the grace and love of our Savior surround you and give you peace. May His loving arms shelter you from pain and grief and may you find His joy for a life well lived by your daughter. She was a blessing to all and God has called her home to His sweet rest. May we celebrate her life as we remember her bright smile, her cheery ways and her sweet spirit....Miley, you will be forever missed...but, we will see you again in your mansion on high.

WE LOVE YOU...PATRICK, TERRI & ALYSON QUEEN

I just finished reading one of the poems from our little book, BENT…but not BROKEN! and I can hardly believe that it has been eleven years since that horrendous childhood cancer wrecked our daughter Alyson’s life. We are so blessed to have a beautiful, healthy and happy teenager (I know that seems like an oxymoron). I also read another article today about a family that had lost their son in a horrible accident and I found in that headline the same question that I remembering asking when cancer threatened to take the life of our little 5-year old….WHY HER …..WHY US?

It seems that whenever life’s trials and tribulations confront us, whether we are faithful Christians or not, the first question we ask is “Why me, Lord, why me?” It’s almost like we are expecting that all the bad, terrible, horrendous outcomes in the world should somehow happen to someone else…particularly those “sinners” that are lost and without hope. I know when the cancer hit, I felt that way. But then, I remember a scripture that God lead me to in the first days of our year long ordeal; one that deals with our suffering in Philippians 1:29 that read, “For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for His sake.”

I must admit, I reeaaallly struggled with this; the thought that it had been granted to me and my family that we should suffer. But, the Lord taught me daily the lesson that to believe in Him made it necessary that I be prepared to suffer for His sake….and suffer we did; but God was ever at our side. His daily provision and care kept us focused on getting beyond the pain and the suffering that we were enduring. As we watched our brave little girl battle an enemy that was determined to win, we held tightly to this one thought…. OUR GOD WAS GREATER THAN WHAT LAY BEFORE US….

And our God always is……

Greater than the disease you have; greater than the bills you owe; greater than the loss of a precious loved one; greater than ANYTHING that Satan may bring against you ….for you have been granted to suffer for Christ …FOR HE SUFFERED FOR YOU!!!!! Don’t try to run and hide or dodge this time of suffering. God is at work and although the outlook may not be good…..the UPLOOK is always perfect!

So, believe in Christ today and let His love be sufficient for all the pains and suffering that you are enduring. I know that you will still ask WHY, I did; but that’s okay…..GOD KNOWS WHY….and He’s only got your VERY BEST at the heart of His heart.

I trust that you will be blessed by the poem that follows this devotion entitled …THE THORN.

Suffering together,
WPQ

Dedicated to The Duvall Family in Memory of Miley

The Thorn

When I’m broken-down and wearied
When I’m downcast, lost, forlorn
I try hard to remember
There’s a blessing in each thorn.

When life’s trials have upset me
When my traveled path is worn
I plead with the Father to show me
There’s a blessing in each thorn.

When my friends have all deserted me,
I might wish to have not been born.
Times like these I always wonder
Where’s the blessing in each thorn?

But my God made me this promise
From His love I can’t be torn.
For when I put my trust in Him
I find the blessing in the thorn.

So each day I’ll trust my Savior
Though life might scoff at me in scorn.
For I know that He is waiting
With a blessing for my Thorn!

TURNING BLUE

If you read my devotional thoughts yesterday, you’ll remember I was lamenting about my plumbing problems but thankful for the insight that God had provided. Well, there’s even more instruction that lay before me in this saga of the leaky toilet.

After the plumber had replaced the inner workings of the toilet, he went underneath the house to check for possible leaks, but not before he had placed me in charge of checking out the toilet and tank for a tight fight of seals and all that technical plumber stuff. He handed me a pack of tiny blue crystals that I was to drop into the water in the tank. If the new float and seal worked properly, the water in the tank would be blue while the toilet water remained crystal clear.

It was dropping the crystals into the water that opened my eyes to God’s timely instruction. The crystals were about the size of a pinhead; the total amount less than the size of dime. I poured a portion of the package in one side of the tank and the remainder in the other. What happened next was to be expected, but I found myself watching in awe. Slowly….ever so slowly, the water began to change to a deep cobalt blue, almost like each individual water molecule was being surrounded by the dye and then, magically reborn a new, brighter, better water molecule. I thought (as I continued to watch this physic-bound phenomenon) this is the way God’s love works …. He gives himself to us and when we take Him in, He changes us to be like Him…and as we come in contact with others, they too will be changed. It took a few minutes, but as I stared in amazement, God laid upon my heart this thought…..Be a Life Changer for Me.

God wants each of us to touch those who are hurting, down cast, broken and with out hope …to touch them with the love and grace that comes from knowing Jesus personally …from being changed from the old, sinful nature to a new creation. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, HE IS A NEW CREATION. Old things have passed away, behold, ALL THINGS ARE NEW.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Slowly that entire thought took hold of me ….pouring over me like a rushing waterfall on a hot summer’s day….God doesn’t expect be to be a World Changer but a Life Changer. Just as each tiny crystal dissolved and influenced those molecules with which it came in contact, God has given me the same mandate….change those whom you can touch...ONE PERSON AT A TIME.

If we show His love, His grace, His mercy, His peace to each person that God brings into our world; then, slowly…ever so slowly, just like the blue water in my toilet tank, each life will be changed and God will be glorified ….and you and I will have done what God intended for us to do ......CHANGE OUR WORLD......
ONE HEART AT A TIME.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden, nor do people light a candle and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light so shine before men so that they may see you good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16
